Gentle, Effective Care for Jaw Pain and TMJ Disorder

TMJ or TMD stands for temporomandibular joint(TMJ) dysfunction(TMD). It  is a blanket term to describe pain or popping of the jaw and it’s associated structures. It is frequently associated with headaches, migraines, ear pain, and neck pain. In some cases, the pain become so severe that it can feel stabbing or electric as in the case with Trigeminal Neuralgia.

When evaluating TMJ pain, it’s important to identify all possible sources including:

  • Abnormal motion of the jaw
  • TMJ disc irritation
  • Dental abnormalities
  • Abnormal jaw muscle tone

Common treatments for TMJ pain include anti-inflammitory medications for pain control, Neurontin for reducing nerve activity, manual manipulation of the jaw, maxilofacial surgery,  and dental correction through braces and mouth guards.

Gentle Innovative Procedure Gets Results Fast

Seeing a TMJD specialist can be expensive and time consuming.

Treatments for TMJ pain is not covered by most insurance and can lead to out of pocket costs exceeding $5,000 or more!

Before spending several thousand dollars a mouth on reconstruction, you may be able to see if you TMJ case is a candidate for the NUCCA procedure. Dr. Shah has been able to get noticeable changes in TMJ/jaw pain with a success rate of 90% without medications or surgery!

At Aligned Family Spinal Care, our goal is to establish a structural correction to the upper cervical spine. The upper cervical spine is intimately connected to key structures that help the jaw function.

When the atlas subluxation complex is present, it can affect the nervous system at a critical area called the Trigeminal Nucleus. These nerves are responsible for the muscles that move the jaw and the nerves that sense pain in the head and neck.

By correcting the atlas shift, the nerves can function normally again and regain normal feeling and function in the jaw. It is because of this relationship of the atlas to the jaw that Dr. Shah works closely with experts in the field of Dentistry in the care of some of the most advanced cases of TMD.

If you or someone you know is struggling with problems from TMD, we may be able to help. Schedule an appointment today by calling us at (847) 550-4812.
